
VUB researcher Sam Mattheus nominated for New Scientist Wetenschapstalent 2025
Sam Mattheus from the Department of Mathematics has been selected as one of the 15 nominees for the prestigious New Scientist Wetenschapstalent 2025 award.
This annual competition highlights the most promising young scientists from the Netherlands and Flanders. For three weeks, the public can vote for their favorite nominee. The outcome of this public vote counts for 50% of the final result, with the other 50% determined by a professional jury. That means your vote truly makes a difference!
Sam’s groundbreaking work focuses on Ramsey theory, a branch of mathematics that deals with order and chaos in large networks. Using innovative geometric methods, he solved a century-old question first raised by the British mathematician Frank Ramsey. His work not only brings new insights into data processing but also opens the door to solving other long-standing mathematical challenges. In recognition of this achievement, Sam was also awarded the prestigious Eos Pipet Prize 2024, marking him as a promising young researchers of his generation.
